While recently backpacking on the Olympic Peninsula's west coast, we spotted this decaying equipment from the old Starbuck Mine. It's located about 10 miles (16 km) north of Rialto Beach in the Cedar Creek area. Some more pictures are here.

Standing at water's edge at the west coast of the Olympic Peninsula, it feels as if one has reached the end of the world itself. The land is broken and washed away by the ocean, only to be reborn somewhere else as a new land, a new continent. Or, well, maybe not but that's how it felt that day.

The red and orange fall colors in this photo make me wish for a nice, cozy fireplace, 'cause my chipped plastic space heater just ain't cutting it.

Jen and I used to camp at the Salt Creek Recreational Area west of Port Angeles. I visited it recently and was reminded about all the cool treasures (such as this neuron-like dried bit of kelp roots) that can be found there.

This pic was taken in the exact same place as this picture (which is one of my favorite photos that I've ever taken), only about a year later. It was too bad the mountains weren't out again.

I often call Port Angeles the poor man's Port Townsend - but I always say this with affection. I've spent a fair amount of time in PA (as the locals call it) and enjoy it's charms. One such charm is the large amount of public sculpture and art that dots the streets - such as this living octopus sculpture located down by the main wharf.

Mountain Goats in Olympic National Park aren't shy about claiming the right of way on hiking trails. My brother snapped this pic on a visit there earlier this year. Aspects of Olympic, such as this shaggy goat and the peaks behind it, really remind me of Glacier, my local national park growing up. Other aspects, of course, remind me just how different it is from any place back home.
