What does it take for a person to quit his job, get rid of his car, leave his friends, and abandon his apartment?
The world, of course.
When I was in university, I would often walk past a small rock on a hill that overlooked the city. On the rock was a plaque that read: “This is the World, The Kingdom I was Looking For.” This sentence, written by the poet John Holmes, has always resonated with me. And thus, 10 years after I first read those words, I’ve decided to go looking for the world.
This August, I will leave my current life to spend the next year traveling. I am lucky – I do not have to do this alone. My girlfriend will also be taking a break from her life to see the world with me. Together we hope to challenge ourselves, learn a language, meet some interesting people, not kill each other, be healthy, and, most importantly, have fun. If wisdom can be found on rocks, who knows, we just might find the kingdom we’ve been looking for.
